I'm interested in how the environment affects cancer risk. Environmental changes affect everyone. It is essential that we understand even small increases in risk as they can add up and have a large impact on all of society.”
As Senior Director of the?Data Analysis Group, W. Ryan Diver, PhD, leads a team of 12 epidemiologist programmers responsible for statistical analysis in the?Population Science Department?at the American Cancer Society, (含羞草影院). His team specializes in a variety of analysis techniques and programming languages. One of his primary duties is to support the analytics process for all the department’s research studies, ensuring they have adequate expertise, support, and resources to analyze their data.?
Diver also conducts research on the relationship of cancer with environmental and occupational exposures to cigarette smoke and other inhaled pollutants, including cannabis smoke.
He is a department leader on statistical-methods and provides statistical advice related to the use of department data.?
I am particularly interested in studying exposure to pollutants and other chemicals that are inhaled. Air pollution, tobacco smoke, vapor from e-cigarettes, cannabis smoke, secondhand smoke or vapor, and occupational exposures to airborne chemicals have similar biologic pathways related to cancer. Research on one of these topics informs the others. My aim is to improve our understanding of how these factors affect the risk of developing cancer to inform health policies to reduce that risk.?
My doctoral research focused on exposure to outdoor air pollution and the risk of developing cancer as well as its impact on lung cancer survival. I continue to collaborate on research that is critical to decisions about air pollution regulations in both the United States and around the world.
I have published studies related to secondhand smoke exposure during both childhood and adulthood and its role in cancer and other diseases. I am also involved in studying genetic factors and other biologic markers related to air pollution and tobacco use. I have conducted research on many types of cancer but have the most experience with breast cancer, lymphomas, and leukemias. I have also been active for many years in large genomics consortia related to these and other cancers.
